Montréal is the most populated municipal region in Quebec, a province of Canada, and is the second most populated city in entire Canada. The city has been named after Mount Royal, the scenic mountain with three peaks that is centrally placed therein and is beautifully upon the St. Lawrence River. Montréal has a beautiful location within the Island of Montréal and is surrounded by a few other islands on its periphery, including the magnificent Ile Bizard Island.
The cityscape of Montréal has a touch of the French cobblestoned colonial setting in the Vieux Montréal and a stunning Gothic touch featured in the Notre-Dame Basilica at its heart.
Several museums throughout the city have exhibitions that feature both ancient art and craftwork and unique modern masterpieces from renowned artists. Other outdoor activities include fun in the many nature parks and gardens plus the beautifully-manicured golf courses around the city.
A visit to Montréal is incomplete without a tour of the vast Underground City with its intricate tunnel network and connections to Metro stations.
Hiking and biking paths and trails up Mount Royal get busy during the peak of the travel season. Other activities include basking under the warm sun, photography, and picnicking, as well as swimming and other water activities along the many beaches.
Beautiful spots around the city include the iconic Notre-Dame Basilica, the ultra-modern Olympic Stadium, the ever-busy Old Montreal Town, and the ancient St. Joseph’s Oratory of Mt. Royal.

When to visit Montréal

The climate that is experienced in Montréal is typical of the warm summer humid continental climate of Köppen classification Dfb, with a very close border on the hot summer continental climate of Köppen classification Dfa. The weather is mainly characterized by summers that are warm to hot, humid, and moderately dry and winters that are extremely cold, snowy, and windy or often icy. Springs and autumns are short and pleasant, but varying weather is possible.
The winter temperature ranges between -1.4°C (29.5°F) and -12.3°C (9.9°F). The cold winds that dominate during the season make it feel even colder. Snowfall is regular, with up to 19.3cm of snow from approximately fifteen snowy days. The wind chill during winter is approximated at -47.1 per winter month, the reason why it gets icy periodically.
Summer remains warm and pleasant, albeit with minimal extremely scorching days. The temperature sticks to between 15.5°C (59.9°F) and 26.8°C (80.2°F), and is made even more heated by the ample sunshine received per day. The wind chill may spread over to summer, albeit minimally.
The city of Montréal can be visited any time during the year because it has a little bit of both extremes in weather. However, the increased numbers of tourists are experienced between May and August, during the peak of summer. The season offers the warmest weather of the year, and most of the days are moderately dry, making an excellent time to tour the city.
The Festival International de Jazz that is held between June and July, is one of the most-attended events in Montréal. The Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in July is another, attracting large crowds and artists both locally and internationally. Between January and February, Montréal holds its annual Fete des Neiges Festival amid skating, tubing, and numerous other fun outdoor activities for the whole family.
